Preventing Hair Loss in Men – Is There a Solution?
What Causes Hair Loss In Men?
Male Pattern Baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia) is a genetic trait and is inherited from your family. If the men in your family are showing a bald spot on the crown or worse, then it is likely that your hair may follow suit. You may also notice that your frontal hair line begins to recede, which is another indication that you are susceptible to Male Pattern Baldness. This is an issue that men have been dealing with for many centuries. According to legend, Julius Caesar invented the laurel leaf wreath to cover his receding hairline! What a shame today’s hair loss treatments weren’t around when he was alive! These treatments can’t change your genetic history but they can help with solving the immediate problem.
The Culprit Which Causes Hair Loss
DHT(dihydrotestostrone) is derived from the male androgen hormone, testosterone. As the androgen circulates through the bloodstream, some is converted to DHT by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. DHT likes to bind to hair follicle receptors, causing the follicles to sprout thinner and thinner hairs until they become Vellus hair (very thin, fine and short) . After time no growth at all will occur and the follicle becomes dormant, some even say that the follicle will actually die.
Growth Phases Of Normal Hair
Normally scalp hair will go through three phases of growth these are as follows:
Anagen – This is the growth phase and will last for two to six years, 90% of your total hair is normally in this growth stage.
Catagen – This is a transient phase lasting a few weeks, this is where the hair becomes thinner and the follicle will begin to shrink
Telogen – The thinner hairs will then fall off to make way for new hair, this phase will last for about two to four months.
What Type Of Product Could Help Prevent Your Hair Loss?
In my opinion a product that provides a twofold treatment plan would be most effective. Firstly it should contain a solution that can be topically applied to the scalp which would contain Minoxidil, the ingredient which is approved by the FDA (US Food & Drugs Administration) and clinically proven to slow/halt hair loss and even re-grow hair! Minoxidil acts on the hair follicle to help prevent the binding of DHT therefore eliminating the constricting effects of DHT. Ideally it should contain a 5% concentration of Minoxidil as opposed to the usual 2% found in most hair loss products.
Secondly an effective product should also come with a daily tablet regime offering superior nourishing ingredients that will help to thicken and strengthen your hair and provide essential nourishment for the scalp.
The ingredients recommended are:
Biotin – provides vital nutrients to your hair and scalp.
Muria Pauma – often been used traditionally to improve a man’s vital energy.
Pumpkin Seed Extract – supports hair regrowth by balancing testosterone levels.
Saw Palmetto – helps to prevent the buildup of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is often linked to male pattern baldness.
Vitamin B6 – supports regrowth of healthy hair by assisting the metabolism of protein and red blood cells.
Zinc – is a vital mineral that supports healthy hair growth.
Eleuthero Ginseng – has been shown to increase energy levels and promote hormonal balance.
Nettle Root – has been traditionally used as a hair tonic.
All of these vitamins and minerals are thought to have a positive effect on hair and scalp health and indeed overall health of the body!
